archaeological survey that I did around Ayahole threw up a lot of evidence of dense, possibly a denser population than most historians and archaeologists had imagined existed in that region at that period of time. The only reason I can think that the population densities were high is because the pottery is characteristic of non-elite kind of life ways. But it seems that populations could be supported reasonably well with whatever little agriculture supplemented in the most part by pastoralism.
