Joseph Smith and Hiram Smith on the Charge of Treason

Joseph and Hiram Smith were charged with treason for their role in the Nauvoo riot. The charge reportedly stemmed from Joseph acting as mayor of Nauvoo, declaring martial law in the city. There appears to have been questions about whether or not Joseph Smith was authorized to declare martial law.
