George Wallace and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States

When he was in sixth grade, a teacher set him up to write stories about political heroes or political cowards. He picked George Wallace as his hero because of the anti-integration stance that he took on civil rights law. The former Alabama governor later changed his mind and became an advocate for gay rights but lost out when LBJ came along. "I would rather have post 68 George Wallace is my governor than anybody else," says Obama.
