The Evolution of Language

A trait can't evolve unless there is a selective pressure from the environment, giving you an advantage or a disadvantage for not having it. Language evolved apparently only in humans because there was a strong selective pressure to continue developing that skill. We don't know and we may never know because this is a period of Earth's history and geographical location. It's really difficult to know what our ancestors were saying in the absence of a time machine.
