Judith Bumbry is a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge. She has spent most of her career in the Nile Basin, which crosses the Sahara Desert. In our own time, the Sahara is relatively dry but it was much greener during its early Holocene heyday. People spread out from the Nile Valley across the deserts through OACs and springs as they dried out.
