Samuel Worcester, a Missionary Without a License
Georgia passed a law prohibiting white men from residing in the Cherokee territory without first obtaining a license. Samuel Worcester had no license and did not seek or apply for one. Worcester along with Eliza Butler and seven other missionaries were courted arrest to help bring the question of Cherokee independence before the supreme court. Georgia governor Wilson Lumkin realized this he had the men set free but when they still refused to leave Cherokee land he re-arrested them again. The two missionaries were sentenced to four years of hard labor in a Georgia jail.
