i'm going to argue that dan's bitter, which selected the great hunger as the most important event in irish history is correct. The events of the late 18 forties were then, and remain today, the most significant event in modern irish history. Previous to the 19 nineties, the great hunger was scarcely written about. There were also very few public commemorations to mark the great hunger either. However, other sources indicate that at a community level, the famine was often talked about. This can be seen in stories gathered by the folk lore commission from irish schools in the 19 thirties.
