On Po - The Security Treaty in the Cold War

Onpo is a contraction of onzen hosho joyaku, or security treaty. That mutual security treaty was signed backin 19 51 as part of the deals ending the american occupation of japan. The treaty made the united states responsible for japan's defense, but also gave it access to strategic bases for use in the cold war and exchange. Japanese conservatives led by the liberal democratic party wanted to revise the language of the treaty into a new form that gave japan a bit more control.
