900 Million Dollars to Day Is Not Worth the Same as It Was in 1965
A deal was struck in 19 65 that allowed the outer continental shelf to be opened up for oil and gas development. The oil industry, in return, agreed to pay into this fund to pay for conservation on land. But legislation was written in a fashion that didn't make that funding until the great american adors act passed mandatory. It's still a lot of money, but it's a fraction of what it wasi originally intended to be.
