The Effects of Oxygen Consumption on FRC
The way to get that oxygen to the body is going to be a higher respiratory rate. In infants, it's dynamically maintained as an unconscious mechanism. So when we anesthetize these kids, then it changes. And so here you have a situation where if you imagine that your oxygen consumption is three times higher and your FRC is half of what it is normally, then your chances of desaturation once apnech are six times higher than an adult.
