When I was in high school, it was actually during the period of post-minimalisms. These artists like Richard Serra and Tony Smith were so exciting to me because they opened up a possibility of how to be an artist that I had never really anticipated. And then when I went to art school and this is 1982 in New York, I discovered theory,. It was a very heady time and specifically feminist theory that was pretty much based in opposition to that work that I was looking at. So that became hugely exciting for me. In fact, I wasn't even consciously using the word queer at that point. I was thinking about gay subjectivities.
