If you allow your opponent to position their limbs and in this unobasically retract their knees and their elbows and their neck, it gets a lot harder to submit them. So rather than trying to pull straight back, i actually fall on to my side, towards his head, while grabbing on to his arm tightly. And then i'm pulling with my core, not with my arms. The only purpose of my arms is to glue his arm to my core. It's my core that's doing the pulling, and not my arms. Same with the finish mechanics. Just like you say, you use your body.
