The more abstract you are, the better a visual explanation is. Dan Schwartz did a number of studies again with junior high students. They were supposed to be diagramming something like the nitrogen cycle. But when two people were working together, those individual decorative features disappeared. Getting the structure down and only the structure can be really important.
