The campaign season of 17 77 did not get going until mid june, when general howe decided it was high time he set out on that one more year of good campaigning to finish off the rebellion. Howe moved a large force off staten island and flashed them around new jersey, hoping to lure washington into a decisive battle. The available options were basically threefold: Go after philadelphia from some angle or another, head north to link up with the burgoyne expedition coming down from canada,.
