The History of English

The history of English begins before the arrival of Germanic peoples who came to be known as the Anglo-Saxons in the British Isles. The language that developed in the wake of their arrival is now known as Old English. Its roots come from a number of Germanic languages and dialects, with the primary contributors being West Germanic, Old Frigian, Old Franconian, and Old High German.
