The Origins of Babylon in Genesis 11

Genesis 11 seems to be talking about an event that happened during the 4th millennium BC. The urbanization of southern Mesopotamia also seems to have begun around this time. Some scholars place the arrival of the Sumerians a little further back but they probably at least arrived sometime after the Ubaid period and then conquered the region bringing with them their unique language. It is possible the biblical authors also allude to this migration saying they came from the east and then took over the region.
