The Psychology of Availability

With availability, it's about how easily examples come to mind. Those you could think of easiest are weighted as most likely. For example, because Hollywood divorces are common in the media, you will exaggerate how often they occur. Most people overestimate what percentage of the household chores they do and underestimate the contributions of their significant other. A judicial error that affects you will undermine your faith in the justice system more than a similar incident you read about in the newspaper. Personal experiences, pictures, and vivid examples are more available than incidents that happened to others or mere words or statistics.
