Smithy is a language made by AWS. They wanted some sort of standardized way to define the interfaces for those so that they could generate SDKs and multiple languages, probably use them internally as well. The base language is very small; it has just like primitives and you define your services in terms of inputs and outputs. That's basically a pure Java interface with methods that have an input type and output type just pogos.
