The Role of China in Latin America

The Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors, we tend to forget when you're situated in Latin America that really their aim and drive was to get to that Asian market. That's what in the 15th and 16th century was driving them to search for Latin America. They did settle in the so-called New World, but they took that as a jumping off point to continue trade with China. And the parallel that 200 years of that extensive trade gave to our understanding of the contemporary relationship still has echoes of that historical positioning between Asia, Latin America, and then European markets.
