The Importance of Blackness

When Barack Obama was elected president, her mother started bawling in front of the TV. "I remember hearing that at eight years old and going, oh, what? So this is a weird thing to have a black president," she says. She recalls being surrounded by people who were very much entrenched in an anti-whiteness ideology as a young person.
