The Importance of Voice in Writing
When I set out to write a group of characters, I usually go and do their backstory. That usually tells me what their voice is going to be because I know what they've experienced. In watching some of the behind the scenes stuff on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joss Whedon said that they'd written a scene and there was a punchline in the dialogue. He didn't explain how they did it, but there comes a point when most writers don't think about voice.
