Amundsen and the Nürge

Amundsen and his men spent weeks shoveling out an airstrip to take off from. They moved 550 tons of ice by themselves on a ration of around 400 grams of food a day. This all happened at more or less exactly the same time as Bird was making his flight to the North Pole in Svalbard. Amundsen, believe it or not, was actually there when Bird returned,. And he was one of the first people to congratulate him for his triumph.
