Public Toilets and the Civilising Process

People used to routinely urinate all over the place against walls on their way home, corridors, stairwells. Night bus provision in London is part of its origin to public urination that workers and so forth waiting at night to get home when urinating against the sides of the National Gallery. So as it were the city fathers felt they should do something about it but absolutely the Victorians to whom we owe public toilets now most of which have disappeared. I remember being toured back years and years ago by the eminent German sociologist Norbert Elias and he was famous for introducing the concept of the civilising process. But gradually shame surrounded a whole range of particularly bodily functions now.
