Know Your Enemy

CHAPTER

Hoover, the FBI, and the Palmer Raids

When Hoover took over the bureau in 1924, he came in first of all as a reformer. He is 29 years old at that point and is appointed first as a kind of placeholder as the acting director. The FBI didn't become the FBI until 1935, which listeners will know is a few years into Franklin Roosevelt's first term. But you mentioned FDR's war on crime. How much would you situate what we think of as a pure new deal project or a new deal institution alongside similar three letter agencies? I think one of the things that really interested me about looking at Hoover and career was to look at these moments when liberals from presidents like Lyndon Johnson down supported him.
