The Gender Politics of Shakespeare
Shakespeare's tragedies tend to be structured around male experience. In comedies women have agency and their story structures the narrative. No play by Shakespeare is dominated by women, either in the sense that a woman speaks the largest number of lines or that women characters collectively carry the majority of lines. But numbers do tell us that in comedies women talk more than they do in other genres.
