The controversy during Pope Leo's time was between the Nestorians or the diaphocites. The question is really does one of these natures take over completely? So the human and divine nature of Christ. Have they relate to one another? Yeah. And Leo wasn't in the place where these controversies were necessarily happening in the East, but he had a kind of middle ground which both sides could accept.
