The History of Nationality in France
No other democratic country has changed its nationality laws more often than France. The Napoleonic Civil Code of 1803 clearly spelt out what it meant to be French. After the bloodletting of the First World War, nationality law became an instrument of demographic policy. Vichy regime added another chapter to this story.
