i definitely think exercising and sport does have a component of rest. In the past five years, i've seen had a much bigger push in the sports industry related to understanding that rest is needed. I oftentimes see, however, when speaking with athletes, that rest days are typically suggested as cessation days. For most athletes, actually, what would benefit them most is finding out how to restore what's been taxed the most during their workout.
