Xerxes and the Immortals
Xerxes sent troops in in waves of ten thousand at a time, and each wave was cut to pieces by the greeks. The immortals were highly trained, professional soldiers that dressed in rich, heavy armor and were afforded luxurious conditions off the battlefield. They were essentially the best of the best, the pinnacle of the persian fighting forces. But despite their training they made absolutely no offensive progress against the hoplihts at the pass whatsoever. And so as the persian dead piled high, xerxes ade decided to send in his alete fighting unit, the immortals, the imperial guard. He was making so little headway against theGreeks
