I don't feel like it's essential to have a heart rate monitor. I think that it's very important to learn to do things by feel and by judging the intensity. The way I tend to use it for most of myself is I can compare one race to another, not much so much during. What did I do wrong? Did I allow things to get a little bit out of hand at one point?
