Trial by Ordeal
Trial by combat was an offshoot of a trial by ordeal. The accuser and the accused fought each other because witnesses or anything else could not be found that would exonerate the accused. Ordeal by water was another variation where someone would be bound hand and foot and then tossed into the water. If your skin wasn't showing no signs of healing you were guilty if it was starting to heal you were innocent.
