Freud's Project for a Scientific Psychology
Freud's idea of dusting is laid out just a dozen pages or so before this little case vignette. A young woman he calls Emma has this terror of going into shops and she really gets traumatized when she goes into a shop. She feels that the two assistants in the shop are laughing at her. Freud works with her and recovers helps her to recover a memory in which an older shopkeeper groped her genitals through her skirt. While doing so he had this this grin on his face and the grin of course it was exactly performing the function we were just attributing to dusting to uh object.
