The Integrity Objection to Consequentialism
Williams thought you probably on any theory really ought to shoot the one and let the ten go free. He thinks that what's wrong with consequentialism is that in a case like that it was just automatically, there's no question about it. You might say that for Williams the consequentialist is a moral opportunist. We'll always do what is best for the world as he believes of course, even when that involves doing something awful. But I can't express this by saying that no ethical theory ought to require you to treat other people as means not as his phrase as ends in themselves.
