Status Epilepticus - What Is the Pathophysiology?

Rahul: Status epilepticus or a seizure in general is essentially an imbalance between excitation and inhibition in the brain. Prolonged seizures leads to selective neuronal loss in particular brain areas, namely the hippocampus, cortex and thalamus. Patients may also have hypoxic ischemic injury with prolonged excitotoxicity. Hypoxia, acidosis, hypotension and hypercarbia adds to the ongoing damage.
