Is the Sun a Red Giant?

If the sun does become a red giant it will engulf and destroy the earth. Our present technology is far too puny to do the job, but neither our theory of evolution nor any other physics we know gives any reason to believe that the task is impossible. The knowledge required to control the sun in this way could not evolve by natural selection alone so it must specifically be intelligent life on whose presence the future of the sun depends. We have several billion years to perfect our half baked plans and put them into practice. One current view is that intelligent life on earth is even now a danger of destroying itself.
