Is There a Good Definition of a Verb?
Michael Polanyi and Thomas Kuhn both write about how scientists come up with new ideas or in terms of words. And they'll also say, Thomas Kuhn writes about how a student can read a chapter of a physics textbook, say they've understood it, and then he gets the problems at the end of the chapter and not get them right. I think that's true of all learning. We learn with examples, not with definitions. It's just not with definition, there's lots and lots and lots of examples. But you have to build up an abstract understanding with the examples.
