The Problem of Deism in the 18th Century
In the early 18th century, Deism was viewed as an extraordinary dangerous by many. The idea that reasons somehow are sufficient to provide people with all the religious beliefs they need and might need is seen as a serious error. A man called Samuel Clark tried to present Deism as a particular type of religious error. He said if you really assume that reason and experience are all you need in religious matters, then you will not only actually end up with a set of religious beliefs which is simply insufficient for obtaining salvation. It may seem very alien to us, but this is this matters.
