There's a sort of simplification or abstraction that occurs when we think about what actual concrete explicit thoughts and activities we attend to. And there is something really fascinating about it the way that we have these very intuitive notions of things being in space and time. So your brain has to spit out tens of thousands of voter control commands in order to just move the pencil to the desk, for example. It was Whitehead, as in Russell Whitehead, who said, civilization advances by reducing complex operations to the trivial. I think that's a good description of what's going on here.
