In The Shadow of the Ivory Tower is about higher education's growing influence on the economic development and urban governance of our cities, in short what I call universe cities. Devarian was a researcher at UChicago when he found out that the historic checkerboard lounge where people had come for decades to pray at the altar of what was called the blues shrine on the south side. And so when the UChicago came in and took it, they charged cultural theft, piracy. For decades, UChicago had turned its back on its south side neighborhoods which were primarily Black and increasingly Brown and working class or poor.
