Pontius and the Samnites

The consuls led their army hastily into the pass, believing all the danger to lie ahead. But when they reached the other side of the flat plain, they found their exit blocked off by a pile of boulders. The samnites had already blockaded the other end as well. There was no getting out, and there would be no attack to repel.
