Following the vote, there were a sort of duelling rallies and marches in Barcelona and madrid. They said nothing conciliatory, said nothing about any possibility of talks or negotiations. And it seems that they did so partly out of conviction, but also on the part of the prime minister because that's largely what his party base favors. There's a continuing strain of authoritarianism and of contempt for both for regional separatism and for popular action in the spanish conservative parties.
