In March 431 BC, a small force of 300 Thebans marched on Plataea under the cloud of darkness. They were led by Pythangolos and Diamporos, who were chief magistrates of the Boishan League. These traitorous Plataians believed that their fellow citizens would fight back once they learned of the Alegarctic coup.
