What's the Problem With Alcoa?

In 1886, Charles Martin Hall solved the problem with commercially produced aluminum by a process of passing an electric current to a bath of cryolite and aluminum oxide. Shortly after Hall introduced his revolutionary new smelting system, he managed to reduce the price of aluminum from $545 a pound to $8 a pound. As a reward for this remarkable contribution to the wealth of the nation and its millions of consumers, the Department of Justice sued Alcoa in 1937,. charging the company's directors on 140 criminal counts, including excessive prices.
