The Legend of the Marathon

Phidipities, the god of fear and panic, assisted the Greeks at Marathon. He ran 26.2 miles back to Athens in full armor to share the good news before dropping dead. The 10,000 or so hoplite soldiers who fought at Marathon became known as the Marathon O'Macoy. In modern Greece, contestants run 153 mile race from Athens through the mountains of Arcadia to Sparta in less than two days in honor of phidipities.
