Some things are viewed as kind of default status. Other things that fall outside of whatever is considered normal or natural is often marked in our eyes. This happens particularly if you're in a largely white society and you happen to be a person of color, you will be marked for that reason. A lot of marginalized groups are marked in a way that they're viewed as basically stigmatized, ore inferior to the default group. That's definitely something that plays a really strong role in sexualizationdparticularly i talk about in the book the idea of phantom invitations,. They feel invited, even though you did not invite them.
