The End of the Japanese Surface Fleet
There's no reason to think that this battle even had it developed favorably for Japanese would have resulted in a major US defeat. It was simply impossible by this point in the war that took her. And I think you're right that there were better ways to conduct this battle than the Japanese did. They could have held the fleet in reserve and built up their land-based air power, which was the key to the whole operation.
