Tertullian, Hippolytus, and Origin
Tertullian and Hippolytus were the first on the scene when the Menarchian controversy sprang up. Tertullian expressed his trenitarian doctrine with a level of clarity never seen before in the west. The father, son, and spirit were only distinct in person, but united in divine substance. He is the first writer to employ the Latin terms Trenitas to describe the Godhead.
