I remember when I worked for Ed Miliband who had quite a bad public image, but then people who met Ed Miliband in real life like he's really nice. That's what first pass the post does as an electoral system. It forces you to focus on a narrow group of voters who are going to make the biggest difference. And they tend to be actually not particularly in tune with the Labour base. They are a bit more socially conservative and likely to have voted leave. So the messaging he's going to use is not necessarily the messaging that a lot of our listeners are going to want to hear - it's just the nature of our voting system.
