The Importance of Attunement in Trauma
Clinicians can really attune the way they gaze, uh, the way that they see, what they see in another person. They can click into skin tone, muscles, facial movements, posture and immediately kind of tune in to the gaze and communicate what they see with the gaze. The intonation of the voice with trauma, we actually lose the ability to hear certain frequencies - those frequencies are critically important to communicate emotion. And so if I've been traumatized, those muscles are either flaccid or hypo, um, alert and are not picking up the subtleties of emotion necessary to be able to have an empathic attunement.
