Desmond had other influences besides Sterner. Charles Darwin's writings on natural selection impressed upon him an almost religious belief in the importance of survival of the fittest. In 1894, the police finally got close enough to catching Arthur that he was forced to flee to Britain. We don't know precisely what he did during this period. There are stories that he traveled to Manchuria and South Africa,. When he landed in North America in 1895, he had made the full transition from Union Man to leftist revolutionary to nihilistic egoist. He settled in Chicago and almost immediately published a book, The Survival of the Fittest, in 1896.
